About the Film: Continuing his hard look at the subject of gun violence, director John Richie returns to New Orleans, the scene of his last documentary, Shell Shocked, with a three night screening of 91%: A Documentary About Gun Violence In America. The film speaks to the majority of Americans who support comprehensive background checks - a factor that may have prevented thousands of gun violence tragedies around the country. Moving beyond divisive political rhetoric, the film shares personal accounts of lives impacted by this broken system and explores the disconnect between voter mandate and congressional action.

"I'm excited to see 91% premiere in my home city of New Orleans and to see the film begin to spark the rational conversation we need to be having in this country about gun policies,” says Richie. "I have a bias towards New Orleans. Its wellbeing means a lot to me. In my travels across this country, I have yet to find another city that has been plagued with the gross level of gun violence experienced here. I love this place, and I can't think of a better place to start this discussion.”

The debate over guns in America is one of the prevailing public health issues of our times. In the wake of the Sandy Hook Elementary School massacre, a 2013 Poll revealed that 91% of Americans support comprehensive background checks - a factor that may have prevented thousands of similar gun violence tragedies nationwide. Yet divisive political rhetoric and congressional gridlock perpetuate a flawed system that impacts communities across the country.

Combining verité-style footage, intimate interviews, and expert analysis, 91% reveals lives permanently altered by shootings that could have been avoided - if not for the existing firearm “private sale” loophole within our current background check system. Honest and heartbreaking, their stories help frame the gun debate as deeply personal as well as a national public health issue that impacts all of us.
